Appalachian Patria

Appalachian Intellectual. To me that means plain thinking. I am A Non Commissioned Officer in the Army Reserves. Let me say...My views expressed here are mine and not those of The U.S. Army, Army Reserve or my fellow brethren in The National Guard. This is entirely Sua Sponte. This is My Thinking. I'm single and in my mid 30's. Politicaly, I'm a Libertarian. (Again, Sua Sponte.I do not represent the Libertarian Party.)I love my native Appalachia, Rock n Roll and...I love God.

Location: Brevard, North Caroilina

I started blogging for two reasons. I was concerned about the changes to the area I live in, Southern Appalachia and I was about to go to the war. I was in Iraq in 06 and 07 and now Kuwait in 11 and 12. Blogging was a means of documenting my experiences and hoping it would help gain clarity. I don't feel that way about it any more. It's said people write blogs because they are frustrated, that's why people read them too. That makes us sound apocalyptic. Are we? Let it be said, what I say here is of my own thinking. This is entirely Sua Sponte and not an official representation of the U.S. Military or the U.S. Government as a whole.

It's Friday...Video Friday.

Now, I do stand to be corrected. Earlier, on a couple of occasions I have said not to post for the sake of posting...Causes flue like symptoms. This is about the only time I do make exceptions. Video Friday, what everyone should be waiting for.

I found this video about five minutes ago. It was filmed around the boy's house, which looks like Kentucky or Virginia. It doesn't look like Western North Carolina, extreme Upstate South carolina or North Goergia. It's pretty though. Good song.

Before there was Cracker, there was Camper Van Beethoven. Take the skinheads bowling.

That is a good song and a darned good find. You were close on Kentucky or Virginia but actually they're from West Virgina. You can hear them occasionally on the local public radio bluegrass show.

The band is South 52 which is a reference to US 52 which runs from Portal, ND to Columbia, SC and follows the Tug River in West Virginia which is the WV and Kentucky boundary (Hatfields and McCoys country) then through Virginia. I'm pretty sure the pics of the river are the New River near Hinton, WV. Especially with that CSX freight whose tracks follow the river.

Probably a lot more info then you wanted, but I've had 2 cups of coffee this a.m. so I'm jazzed.

But, again, good find!

West Virgina makes sense, Gunner. I thought that it may be the New River, which, BTW is the worlds second oldest river, proceeded by the Nile and followed by the French broad, the third oldest. I imagine the Tuckasegee and Little Tennessee of WNC ar not far behind, but that's speculation. Those are much different rock formations than you find here.
I suppose it was a good find, and indeed it's a good song. I didn't look enough to see who it was. Now everyone knows and that's a good thing.

Can't remember where I saw it but there is some geologic evidence that many, many years in the past there was no Ohio River. The New River went a pretty far piece up into northeast Ohio and curved back south thru Indiana and emptied into the Mississipi (or its predecessor) before going to the Gulf of Mexico.

Then the Ice Age hit and the glaciers flattened northern Ohio and the Appalachian foothills were formed and then we ended up with the Ohio and its tributaries.

Whew... another long-winded one. Sorry 'bout that but I like that sort of stuff.

Gunner, I wouldn't say that is too much information. Interestingly, these rivers flow northward, very few rivers do. The New actually starts in NC, it touches four states.

The geology and geography of Appalachia is a fascinating thing.

Hey you guys, the history lesson is great. Is it just me or do you find most any history about the South interesting. I don't know if people all over this country feel the same pride that Southerners do about their heritage. I am extremely proud of being a Sothern girl. Fascinating about the BTW being the second oldest river in the world. I will have to share that with my 2 boys. One of them is a huge history buff. Oh, good sond by the way. Thought any more about that pretty puppies name??

Hey, Baygirl, maybe we Southerners are more fascinated, but, I know there is rich history in several places and people kow it. I think it is really just a rural thing, where people have roots. I stand to be corrected, the New only touches three states, NC, Virgina, and WV. Ohio doesn;t count, it's across the Ohio River.

So far she is still Skeeter Head, hasn't changed yet. Maybe after I watch her some more.

Many years ago (notice how many times my postings start with this) a large oak tree had one of its many large branches to stop across the driveway toward the poarch. One day my step-father stopped the tractor (a Farmall H, 1945 model) under the branch and took off of the tractor a small roll of old barbed wire and put it on the branch planning to use it to patch a fence. The barbed wire stayed and pretty soon it became a memory of the time it was placed there on the branch and that was how it was remembered and no one thought of taking the barbed wire down. Now, if you is a Yankee, you don't know what I am talking about. You might think I am talking about the past. I am not. I am talking about Skeeter Head. You ain't gonna change Skeeter Head's name because that would be unconstitutional or at least, grounds for secession (Did I spell it right?) Anyway, that is the way I see it.

I beg to pardon, Anonnymus Bill, my squeaky dog's real name is Rambo, but since he squeaks so much, Squeaky stuck. But, Skeeter may stick, even if some kid picked his nose. Farmall? Hmm. my dad has an old Ford Trctor that has been on fire about three times, just rewire it and it runs like a champ.

So are you saying anonymous that to call someone by a nickname or a pet name is unconstitutional?? I just think for a sweet face like hers, Skeeter is just not fitting. Yes, Appalachianist you are probably correct about other parts of the country being just as proud, we Southerners tend to think no one could be more proud than us. I hope everyone had a beautiful day. Baygirl

Baygirl, I'm on the verge of calling her Crouch, because she's so prone to crouching. I don't know.

LOL, Southern Meglomania.

Hey there!! Crouch is an interesting name, not to be confused with Crotch(ha!). I like different names, had a cat named Arizona once. From what I understand after working for Vets for some time, dogs respond best to one syllable names, so Crouch would work:) How is everything in Appalchia Country??

Now see, baygirl, I was told different by a vet. She told us one time that you should use 2 syllables to name your dog. Especially if you plan on training it somewhat.

In training you normally use 1 syllable commands like "Stay!"; "Heel!"; "Fetch!"; "No!"; or "Bad!" So your dog will associate a 1 syllable word as a command from you and conversely will soon associate the 2 syllable word as your way of greeting it.

Of course, you can name a cat or goldfish with a one syllable name as no matter what you do you're never gonna train one of those. They do just about whatever they want to do.

Baygirl, I was going to beg to pardon, but, Gunner has done it for me. LOL, maybe it shows how much time people spend chastising their dogs. Maybe Skeeter should be called Wormy, because she comes a crouching, wagging her tail and she's so small. Crothch? LOL.

I'm with you Gunner.
