Just A Dull Post
I've been caught up with work. I've pulled some long hours and then some spare moments were tied up with me doing my First Sergeant Gig. So, all work and no play makes The Appalachianist a dull boy. Thus, no post from me.
I could talk about the weather...It's just been flat out cold. Though today was quite a bit warmer. I could talk about any what not...
My little Cur Dog, Co Co is out of heat. She must have felt punished being penned up. She kind cowered and stood back from me when ever I fed her. Sensitive little dog, she is. I've been told Curs are like that. I've got some pictures of those Kemmers on FaceBook...AKA FaceBore...And folks ask me for one as a pet. Co Co ain't like them. She's brindle, has a smaller head and is not as big. I actually prefer a blocky head dog of a medium build. But, I can say, she is smart and a fast little Dog. She's got tight little feet as well.
Those poor folks in Haiti. In some ways it's better it happened on land than out in the Ocean. It's bad though. It couldn't have happened to anyone worse either.
I've felt some Earthquakes here. I've sat up in bed with the house shaking. I could only imagine what that 7.0 felt like. As a Nation, we waste allot of money on foreign aid and get ourselves consumed in other nations affairs. This is one time we need to get involved and give. It's the Christian thing to do. Anything else would be a sin.

My professor will probably be going to help with identification down in Haiti through a mass disaster response group she belongs to. And here I am, finally, with the kind of training I would need to help (if not a lot of experience), but she can't take any of us grads. : (

Good words about Haiti-I've never been there and can't imagine what it was like before this, and not its worse.
Pipsqeak, it's of Biblical Proportions. But, this has happened in recent history, some years back it was in Turkey.
I don't know how well identification will go. There may not be much recorded. Not allot of dental records. But, then there is DNA.
It's going to stink.

Yeah it will be awful, but its why I am studying anthropology. I just want to use my education and help out.
Dental records might be available, but my prof. can narrow it down through the biological profile she will build looking at bones. She can figure out sex and approx. age and identify any obvious disease or previous injuries that might point toward a certain person.
Didn't Pakistan or India have a major earthquake not that long ago? Although I can't remember if it was as bad as Haiti. Help is getting in now, hopefully people will get the food and water they need.
I don't think that many will be identified. Bodies are already beginning to rot, and many have been buried in mass graves. Bodies are covered with something called quick lime. Quick lime allows the body to change quickly. The trauma of the island is too great and vast to be easily contended with and there have been shootings and lootings. Roaming packs of dogs have been eating the dead. Disposal of dead bodies will take precedent over identification. I just hope the American Army can help the Hatians without themselves being put at too great a risk. "It's going to stink." is going to become all too true. I don't think I am being negative as much as I am looking at the enormity of the crisis. There is little in the way of buildings or landing strips available nor is there an unobstructed port. Poverty will get in the way of rescue or identification. The country has the highest rate of AIDS infection in the Western hemisphere. There is a great deal of tuberculosis. The Hatian government itself is broke, disorganized and disheartened. In short it is a mess, but we shall see. Bill
