I heard something sort of funny on the way home. President Obama, speaking to China said that we get our clothes and etc. from China. Then he went on to say we sell them machinery. I heard this as I passed Ecusta Road. Ecusta, where ever the name came from, was the paper mill here. A few years back through a change of hands, a union strike, bankruptcy and more drama than an unhappy marriage the paper machines got sold to China. The place is leveled now. Only a few buildings stand, one of which is the Waste Water Plant.
Western North Carolina is a sick place. Somebody somewhere has got the notion to make it into "a village". I think "Freedom Village"...Boy, that's pretty damn patriotic. I hope no Tax Dollars get spent on the venture...
But, the way things go around here, I don't know. The County built a new jail to replace the old flat roofed one down town that leaked. The new one, that cost a nice sum, has a water fountain at the entrance. All of the repeat offenders can rejoice that the water is splashing out front now and not inside. What do you want to bet the new one leaks?
Oh, but it's got 100 beds. More than Transylnowhere needs. Yes, even with us drunken, and rebellious Scotch Irish Hillbillies. The plan is that they can rent out beds to other Counties of drunken and rebellious Scotch Irish Hillbillies that has ran out of room. We'll leave the light on for you.
Personally, I find it a bit sickening that local government's are in the incarceration business. But, who am I? A sober and rebellious Scotch Irish Hillbilly?
Now, if everyone around here would stop breaking the law...I know, it's hard to do that and mind your own business at the same time...We can put half of the Government out of business. Think of the money we could save!

Angle segues nicely into.... I was listening to Black Crowes today to get my head on right again. She Talks To Angels (as opposed to talking to angles which is pointless, except if it's a right angle, I suppose) to be exact. I love that song. If you know t then you know the te dark, dirty gospel feel it has going on. Delbert McClinton has one ofthem type songs too, and it also mentions angels, but he title of that one escapes me at the moment.

Yeah, here illegals mostly get picked up on other charges by local cops and get held until INS calls for them. The last I heard though, they didn't make the majority of the prisoners. But, I hope they like the water fountain out front.

I am sorry for the rant . . . the recovery is just not doing well in the places I mentioned. The jobless rate is at 20% or more in those areas. It is interesting that many years ago (in the twenties) fliers were sent to the mountains of western North Carolina and eastern Tennesee asking people to come work in the cotton mills being built in these towns.
My best friend from high school parents came down from eastern Tennesee. The people came with their pride and a culture that seems to have been lost. The people had pride in themselves and their work even as "lint heads," but the pride seems mostly gone now . . . unemployment does that to you.
My friend's grandfather (a long story) fought for the Union during the Waaaaar. He was one of two or three from that eastern Tennesee county who enlisted for the North . . . called Yankees . . . got a pension.
The unemployed from this cotton mill culture are the real immigrants in the new diversity that is America. Anyway the recovery doesn't seem to be going so good for the working man and woman, but what do I know. Bill

Well, I will say something about the bear . . . ain't she cute. It reminds me of being at Cades Cove one afternoon on the circle route around the cove when my children and I were stopped by a traffic jam with so many cars stopped and their drivers and occupants out in the field looking up at a pair of bear cubs that had climbed a tree for protection. I went to look at the commotion and seeing the two cubs and no moma thought that the crowd was insane. We went back to the car. I did not want to meet the cubs' moma under those conditions even if she were just a little ol' Appalachian black bear from the the hills around about. Anyway . . . nice picture. Bill
I spent a week, just before Thanksgiving in western North Carolina. Had a wonderful time around Sapphire, Cashiers and Lake (some long word that starts with a "t", I'd say Texarkana but someone from Arkansas would hurt me). I was interested that so many restaurants and tourist spots were for sale, but in the realestate booklets, most of the houses were for sale for somewhere between half million and a million. My wife and I kept asking each other where the "real" people live? It is beautiful country though, and next time I win the MEGA MILION lottery I may come up there and shop for property.
Three and Ten, my zip code is Lake Toxaway, though, I don't live in Lake Toxaway proper. It's on the Atlantic side, I'm on the Gulf side of the Mountain.
The real people? we're here. You just have to turn off of the main roads.
Realestate people are often get rich quick artist. They advertise their big items. And, they over price things. Life would be so much better here if they went back to where many of them came. I don't say that with a vandetta, but the plain and simple truth.
