Appalachian Intellectual. To me that means plain thinking. I am A Non Commissioned Officer in the Army Reserves. Let me say...My views expressed here are mine and not those of The U.S. Army, Army Reserve or my fellow brethren in The National Guard. This is entirely Sua Sponte. This is My Thinking. I'm single and in my mid 30's. Politicaly, I'm a Libertarian. (Again, Sua Sponte.I do not represent the Libertarian Party.)I love my native Appalachia, Rock n Roll and...I love God.

I started blogging for two reasons. I was concerned about the changes to the area I live in, Southern Appalachia and I was about to go to the war. I was in Iraq in 06 and 07 and now Kuwait in 11 and 12. Blogging was a means of documenting my experiences and hoping it would help gain clarity. I don't feel that way about it any more. It's said people write blogs because they are frustrated, that's why people read them too. That makes us sound apocalyptic. Are we? Let it be said, what I say here is of my own thinking. This is entirely Sua Sponte and not an official representation of the U.S. Military or the U.S. Government as a whole.

The Choice of Free Will

I wasn't going to do this, I was going to write somethig out. But, this came to my mind in my ponderings. Life is about choices, not playing along. You can say Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul have done the right thing about staying in the Republican race. The Libertarians and the Green Party are still running.

RUSH! Best rock band to ever come out of Canada.

Free Will

Rush, Free Will
There are those who think that life is nothing left to chance
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance.

A planet of playthings,
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive.
"The stars aren't aligned
Or the gods are malign"
Blame is better to give than receive.

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose free will.

There are those who think that they were dealt a losing hand,
The cards were stacked against them
They weren't born in lotus land.

All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate.

Kicked in the face,
You can pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate.

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose free will.

Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete.
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet.

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose free will.

Never have been a fan of Rush, but I always find the topic of Free Will interesting.

I've always liked Rush. I was eleven when I first heard Spirit of Radio, I was hooked. I still feel the same today when I hear it as I did then. Rush was the band that made rock n roll intellectual.

Never liked RUSH either. Hated the girly-man voice he sang in. Same went for Robert Plant, but the bluesy, crunchy guitar grew on me.

I am glad Paul stayed in the race. Huckabee, and more importantly his fan base, frighten me. I guess I just feel it's time fo a little more moderate view in the White House.

AHFTBR, everytime you post, I realize we have a lot in common. We're so much alike we probably couldn't be in the same room together for long. That's the natural orneriness of things.

Free will seems to be the last thing any of the political groups want anyone to possess. As to the song, I think the lyrics are not particularly well thought out and are somewhat contradictory . . . but that's me. Free will has been discussed and argued for as long as . . . well, for thousands of years. Do we actually have free will . . . that reminds me I'm hungary . . . to breakfast and coffee . . . more coffee . . . so I can think about it . . . to the Huddle House and more coffee. I wonder if the addictive joy of having coffee and a breakfast with friends and the need to procreate ugy children (mine are not ugly)takes away free will? Ummmmmmmmm. just kidding. Have a good day guys.

Ed, I felt like hearing the Spirit of Radio this morning, so, here I sit listening to it as an Air Handeler keeps sounding alarms.

About Mike Huckabee and his followers, the Theocracy issue is a concern, but, personally, he seems to ne too good of a guy to want to play that out. And, I don't trust someone simply because they are a preacher, etc. You trust people, not professions.

To hear the news media, it sounds as if he has an army of holly rollers. I don't get that. And, there is a differeance between holly rollers and Christians. Maybe it's his veiws? For instance he supports the Fair Tax. "You mean all those people down south do something without a preacher telling them to?" At least those of us that think.

Ron Paul has been criticized over his followers more than anyone...OK, I know allot of gullible people that vote democrat...I did see on Wayne Allen Root's web page somet9ing saying Paul was "all but hoorably bowing out", but didn'tsee anything on RP's web site...Yes you former Coats America employee, I said RP.

OH! Stayed at the Naval Supply Corps School Bachelor Quarters in Athens this last weekend. If you are ever there to catch one of them Athens Rock shows, stay there. Good Digs.

Yeah, you and AHFTBR better stay out of the same rooms...

Annon, your bill, I know your Bill. The lyrics do contradict themselves. Perhaps the throwing out of thought? Any logical, intellectual arguement requires differant veiws.

I like eating at Hudle House, you can have a decent looking woman set food down in front of you, call you pet names and no strings attached other than paying for your meal. It's kind of like Free Will, but a limited menu.

But seriously, all of you people out there in Internet Land, take our advise...Don't play along for the sake of playing along when you dn't feel like it. It's bad karma and causes tooth decay.

First of all I'd like to say that Rush rocks and I'd like to see them (going to see Van Halen the 25th in Atlanta) but I like the other band from Canada known as Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush (look 'em up). Next, Dan, did you find out about when we could score some tickets for Down. It's getting close... Finally, HAPPY V.D. EVERYBODY!!!

I was on Mohagony Rush's live album. 98 Rock threw a 98 cents concert at Curtis-Hixon Hall in Tampa. It must have been late 70s. A concert for under a buck got the place full, even though the band was, at best, minimally famous.

I have even seen Uriah Heep in concert, although I referred to them as "You're a heap", and couldn't wait for them to get off stage. The Hammond organ was mostly just annoying that night. They were opening for somebody good, Kiss, I think it was.

I believe if you paid more than $20 to see a band then you paid too much.

Of course 98 cents would go a ditance in the late 70's.

Murf, I figure you being semi Canadian, you would like Rush.

It seems that me and Twister ae out numbered here...

Did anyone notice the luandry machines on stage? I didn't get that.

didn't notice the laundry machines because since I already know I don't like rush I didn't want to torture myself, reading the lyrics quietly was enough for me.

Well, R'ed natural orneriness or not I still would rather be in a room w/a person of like mindedness. I don't spend too much time w/those that don't have any common sense.

I didn't mean to be anonymous. I am just computer noncompliant . . . free will . . . er, more like stupid . . . well, yes, it was I. Is it me or are we breaking new ground intellectually, but ask yourself, "What would a wild Hog think about it all?" Interestingly, a Hog is an example of free will. The dern things will go miles in one direction and then turn around and without a care go miles in the other direction without a care. The hog we raised would get out from time to time and do that, and I had to go get her. That was especially true when we tried to shoot her once between the eyes and missed. She went through the pen as if the boards weren't there. It is a true story. Just thought I would confuse everyone by combining a story about a Hog with free will. I hope everyone gets back home on this Friday night and tries to read this after a six pack or two . . . true dat! Take care, Bill

AHFTBR,
I like me OK, but people like me tend to get on my nerves. I would have to suppose that if people like me were with me in a room, then because they were like me, me being me would just kinda piss them off.

Well, that about clears things up, huh?

Mew, everyone else, you'lls not caring for Rush aside, what the laundry machines were about, I don't know. I gathered it was in Toronto.

People read something and figure I know, or think I know specifically. I do my share of gathering to ascimulate an idea as to what something is about. I don't know everything. If I did...

Amendment to the $20 bucks rule. DBT is in Asheville next month for $25. Like it or not prices are going up. Maybe I should adjust for inflation?

"computer noncompliant . . . free will " AMEN!

Stupid, no. That's right about hogs. Except wild ones will follow the mast. They are smart, but panic.

Ed, I'm glad we have enough things in common to get along like we do..This goes for all of you'll...But we're not alike.

I need to clean up the yard, the ind and Wiggly Butt Walker Dog have wreaked havoc.

App you might not know everything but you sure know a lot.

Well R'ed just don't know, at some point everyone gets on my nerves whether I like them or not. Let's just say if I had a choice of being in a room w/you or a code pink fool, I would pick you.
Define people like you and/or me.

Slow on the draw...don't know who
DBT is, but $25 is worth it for a night out hearing good tunes you love. To me it's when the marketing crap comes in to play for gouging folks I resent. So if DBT does either of these quotes for you then by all means it's worth $25.

"Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life" Berthold Auerbach 1812-1882

"The night shall be filled with music and the cares that infest the day shall silently steal away" Longfellow

Have fun App! Then tell us all about it.

Canadian band? I always liked BTO but they were basically a one-hit outfit, I believe.

Plus, The Band, who gained fame backing Bob Dylan, was primarily Canadian with the only American being Levon Helm, the drummer.

Music tastes are very subjective.

Mew, if I thought I knew everything, I'd know nothing.

DBT is the Drive By Truckers. Good quotes.

Gunner, I think BTO had several. I always liked them, that is as a kid on the radio. Missed seeing them once because my brother mixed some times up.

The Band was mostly Canadian. Ol' Levon had throat cancer, and still has his voice. He covered "False Hearted Lover" on his last CD. I like it.

OK, you'l...

DBT...I should have known that.

Yep, ya gotta go see them. How far is Asheville from you? I hear that is one of the number one places to live in America.

Mew, time wise it takes me an hour to be right smack dab in the middle of downtown Asheville. It's roughly 50 miles from my doorstep. I live on the head of the French Broad and it is a ways don stream.

Best place to live? Gosh no. The cost of living is high, not a very high job market, their water system sucks, and they have bad air (placed between mountains as to be in a bowl). No, it's the big town of WNC, has an active night life, active downtown, decent music scene and good folks...Nice place to visit.

I'm not into Rush, but this song means a lot to me. The lyrics are everything I try to explain to the world. Though Free Will only works in a truly logical society, I hold out hopes that something will swoop down to remove the dishonorable someday, so the rest of us can have our happily ever after. It's unlikely to occur, but it makes for a great fantasy.
