Appalachian Patria

Appalachian Intellectual. To me that means plain thinking. I am A Non Commissioned Officer in the Army Reserves. Let me say...My views expressed here are mine and not those of The U.S. Army, Army Reserve or my fellow brethren in The National Guard. This is entirely Sua Sponte. This is My Thinking. I'm single and in my mid 30's. Politicaly, I'm a Libertarian. (Again, Sua Sponte.I do not represent the Libertarian Party.)I love my native Appalachia, Rock n Roll and...I love God.

Location: Brevard, North Caroilina

I started blogging for two reasons. I was concerned about the changes to the area I live in, Southern Appalachia and I was about to go to the war. I was in Iraq in 06 and 07 and now Kuwait in 11 and 12. Blogging was a means of documenting my experiences and hoping it would help gain clarity. I don't feel that way about it any more. It's said people write blogs because they are frustrated, that's why people read them too. That makes us sound apocalyptic. Are we? Let it be said, what I say here is of my own thinking. This is entirely Sua Sponte and not an official representation of the U.S. Military or the U.S. Government as a whole.

Politik

I did it today. I voted. You've probably been hanging on the edge, I know. Oh, you'd never guess who I voted for. Bob Barr...No preaching...

I am appalled however, at all of the hypocrisy, untruths, lies ans nonsense in this election, not to mention the ignorance. It's all you see on Television, nothing else is being advertised. I'm afraid things are only going to get worse.

I will tell you this, Bob Barr, Ralph Nader and a Rev. Baldwin had a debate in Cleveland Ohio today. It's supposed to be replayed on C-Span this weekend. I know you've had your fill of it, but, it's there if you want to see it. The third parties should have done this earlier...It may have made more of a difference.

I didn't vote Bob Barr for president, though I did vote the Libertarian nominee for Gov and Senate - mainly because the Dems and the Repubs didn't do much for me. My dad said that there were 12 presidential nominees down in Florida, crazy.

But I saw Barack on Wednesday...skipped my bone class for it and stood in a line for about an hour or so...pretty neat stuff - got to see police snipers on the roofs and the bomb squad hanging around drinking coffee waiting for something to go wrong.

Snipers, and Bomb Squad, now that's entertainment, Pipsqeak.
I can't believe you skipped your bone class though, LOL.
I voted for Munger too. And, I admitt I voted for Elizabeth Dole, I figured it was too close and, if there is not enough balance in the senate, things can get out of hand. But, then, they all cme out with that bail out.

The Libertarians had to fight hard to get back on the ballot in this state. NC Ballot Laws are very restrictive. More power to Florida, people desrve a chice, and not the lesser of two evils.

there's something old fashion in me, I'll wait till Tuesday and vote. Somehow, I don't think I'll be able to forget! The 3rd parties should have more imput--but the big two control things so tightly for their own benefit.

I too prefer to wait until the day of because I like that feeling of 'comradeship' even if that usually includes waiting in line plus I think Michigan only allows you to vote absentee via mail not actually getting to go to a church basement and pulling a lever early. I don't think it would have made a difference because the media doesn't care about the smaller parties and unfortunately, the media has way too much pull in this type of thing. I think one of them is a woman but she's not getting any of the air time that Sarah is or that Hilary did.

Murf, I have to work 12 hour shifts next week, so I went early. I have nothing against the voting on the traditional day. I had to wait about 20 or so minutes. I don't think it would have been worse at my Community Center. But, like I said, I have 12s that day.

The media does have too much pull. Maybe they like to think they can control things. I can't tell you who that woman is, I know there are about 16 people running for President.

Sage, you said it, AMEN!

President Barr.
I watched him a couple of times while traveling. He was pretty straightforward I thought.

I voted major party, though. I had to. Had to do my part to keep someone away from 1600 Penna. Ave. Plus, I like the guy I voted for. Didn't seem like a lesser of two to me. Yeah, I know, I'm soft and jelly like.

We might have 12 candidates down here, but hey, they're all nuts. Like the population, I suppose.

OK... actually I voted quite some time ago and have been crossing my fingers since that a dead homo arab or something don't turn up in his closet and embarrass me.

I know who your talking about, Ed. And, I have allot of respect for him. I believe he's more personable than many think.

I reckon Florida is nuts. We're just odd here in WNC. Maybe that's the reason so many switch back and forth between the two.

I'm hungry...

Not really related to your post, Dan, but you're Army so you might understand some of this.

Pvt Davis called this evening from Ft Lee after returning from a week at A.P. Hill. They were up there doing their 92G field training. He said they also did a lot of ECPs, kicking in doors, clearing rooms, etc. He says he considers himself an 11B first (he's real proud that he went to Benning for basic) and a 92G second. Also, he's now wearing the First Sergeant chevrons (student type, of course) for his Company and proud of it and is working hard to be an honor grad with merit or sumtin' like that so he can be an E-3 when he graduates. He's got 9 days and a wake-up.

I'm proud of him.

Oh, also, this is his first experience with training along side co-eds. He says he'd go to war with about 25% of 'em with no hesitation and about half of those could probably kick his ass and anyone else in the division. But the others? Eh.... they should have never left home. :-)

AGT- When I used to live in King George, VA we used to go up to A.P. Hill all the time to fish. Lot of lakes and woods there.

Along the way from K.G to A.P., which is near B.G. (Bowling Green, VA,) you pass a hysterical marker (ex's term for historical marker) commerorating the spot that John Wilkes Boothe was captured after shooting Lincoln. Apparently, he was caught in the median of U.S. 301...near the spot I got a speeding ticket for doing 36 MPH!

Small. strangely spinning world

ner, they must have built allot of stuff on Ft. Lee. When I went to 92G School back in 86 the field portion was done right there on Ft. Lee. Ft. Picket, though in need of remodeling, is not far away. It's property of the Virginia National Guard now.

When I was a 92 G in 3rd Ranger Bn, I was a part time 11B. Without going into allot of detail, we were an additional force to the Bn. The cooks, clerks, and so on are the first line reinforcements to a Bn. or as I prefer, the fill ins, Litter Bearers, Ammo Bearers, ETC.

Allot of the Guards on the gates and perimeters in Iraq are Cooks, and anyone that can be spared...Allot are Artillery.

LOL, Ed...Ahla Bob Dylan, where you want this killing done, he said out on Hwy "301"...

Well, R'Ed he told me A.P. Hill was really wooded and out in the sticks and you could get lost out there. A speeding ticket for 36 mph? Surely there's more to the story than that.

Yeah, that's it, Dan. I got it mixed up, he's a 92G but also considers himself an 11B. Not sure why they went up to A.P. Hill, but do know he's in one of the last remaining WWII or Korean barracks left at Ft. Lee. His class will be the last to use the old dorms as they are scheduled to be torn down after they graduate.

Yes, Gunner, There is. To quote the deputy, "From 1600 to 1645 this is a school zone." An invisible, unmarked school zone apparently.

It's a Virginia thing. I was only mildly surprised.

Years ago I got a ticket there for my fog lights being mounted 3" too high.

and the wife got nabbed for too dark a grade of window film that he made her pull off on the spot or face a ticket.

Probably should just stay away from that area, now that I ponder it some.

Bored small town deputies. Gottaq love 'em.

Apparently, John Wilkes Booth wasn't driving fast enough for conditions. Virginia is a hard place to get through unscathed. Isn't A.P. Hill close to Fort Pickett? Isn't Fort Pickett at Blacksburg, Virginia? Went there years ago and almost starved. Six dinning facilities and only one that people would willingly eat at . . . everyone who could went to Hardees outside of post to sit in the airconditioning . . . I sat through an elctrical storm there on a hot summer night sitting in the dark in the middle of nowhere in the south of Virginia and waiting for the storm to stop. Oh, Obama won. Bill

You'll, I've been busy. Post when I get the chance.

Bill, Picket is at Blackstone. I slept in a heck of a rain storm there and oh, the mosquitoes are massive. My face stayed broken out from shaving because the pipes were so rusty. Fortunately in that sense I spent half of my time there in the field.

I had a funny post and lost it, but about Fort Pickett . . . you got it! I'm glad you survived as per usual. The story sent chills . . . I remember one of our guys slept at the back end of an old M113 and someone inadvertently dropped the door on him, and, of course, he was crushed. Do not under any circumstances sleep under the damned door of an M113. Bill
