Appalachian Patria

Appalachian Intellectual. To me that means plain thinking. I am A Non Commissioned Officer in the Army Reserves. Let me say...My views expressed here are mine and not those of The U.S. Army, Army Reserve or my fellow brethren in The National Guard. This is entirely Sua Sponte. This is My Thinking. I'm single and in my mid 30's. Politicaly, I'm a Libertarian. (Again, Sua Sponte.I do not represent the Libertarian Party.)I love my native Appalachia, Rock n Roll and...I love God.

Name:
Location: Brevard, North Caroilina

I started blogging for two reasons. I was concerned about the changes to the area I live in, Southern Appalachia and I was about to go to the war. I was in Iraq in 06 and 07 and now Kuwait in 11 and 12. Blogging was a means of documenting my experiences and hoping it would help gain clarity. I don't feel that way about it any more. It's said people write blogs because they are frustrated, that's why people read them too. That makes us sound apocalyptic. Are we? Let it be said, what I say here is of my own thinking. This is entirely Sua Sponte and not an official representation of the U.S. Military or the U.S. Government as a whole.

Pilot Mountain

I said here once that they (The Forest Service) would not hardly drop a match to either the Pisgah or Nanatahala National Forests. Only a small slither of woods between the McCall Cometary and Gloucester Gap was all that had been burned in recent years on the Davidson River District*. In March of this year The Forest Service conducted a controlled burn at Gloucester Gap and up on Pilot Mountain.

Pilot is a unique Mountain and was a very good choice for a controlled burn. These picture and videos are from several of my recent trips to Pilot Mountain. I just can't sit around on weekend mornings I either need to get out and tromp around or work. You better enjoy this post because it ain't being easy to load...At this rate it's going to take a couple of days and Bosco is nervous. Lightening is going to grab her and not let go until it thunders.

As you can see, the date his began and the date it gets up, the night of 3 July, before I gt to bed to catch up on some beauty sleep. I'll add the pictures to it as the days go until I get the next posting up. Which may be a bunch of pictures and such too. I've had a few adventures lately.
The first two pictures are of Galax growing on the ground.
Well, said to heck with it while I went on to bed and let it load. And here July 4th, it's not working. Happy 4th.

Appalachianist guy

*I also know of a couple of places in the Nantahala, Coward Bald in Jackson County and Albert Mountain in Macon County, above Coweeta Creek.

You ain't using dial up are you?

I heard about a group called Jypsi that was supposed to be bluegrass meets bohemia. I can see flashes of that in the videos I have watched, but couldn't find enough on youtube to post a sample for you. Just helping to keep your horizons open.

That picture is lovely! The forest is so dense and green, just beautiful, and being raised in west Texas--the "Armpits of America", I so appreciate beautiful scenery! I clicked on it to get a better look and found that picture is huge!! If you go into paint or even paint.net, you can reduce the size of it, and it won't take any time at all to load. I'm sure you know that, but in light of your comments thought I'd verbalize it anyway. Have a fabulous 4th! How could you not in a place that looks like that!?

Oh and btw, I could use a power auger! Drill down into the center of a 4x4, run some wires, a kit, and voila! A rustic lamp! ;)

Damn, just commented and poof!

It rained for a minute, wnet and patched up one of the dogs...And not a thing. It's Blogger, AKA Pond Water..But you can't beat th price.

Ladies first,
Leslie, I've known people from West Texas, never spent any time there myself, but, thy all say the same thing.

Blogger is just being slow. I put up the large picture because, here at Appalachian Patria, home of the Hill Billy Rave,we are all about quality. But, even th medium is in pond water mode.

Ed, I like Gypsy women...They're pretty, like to dance alone, read your palm with a gleam in their eye and steal your horse while you ain't paying attention.
I've heard of a Gypsy Punk band, kinda like thrashing accordions, but not Jypsy, the Bohemian Blue Grassers...Thought provoking Rural America...Appalachiaism is on the rise. Thanks for the heads up, if you liked it it can't be bad.

Happy 4th, resist cultural marxism, fight like a heathen, love like an angel and dance like a gypsy girl.

Happy 4th to you, also, Dan.

Bluegrass meets bohemia. Goodness, I'm just now getting used to cowpunk. But being somewhat of a traditionalist I tend to listen more to Lester and Earl than anyone else.

I Googled Pilot Mountain and came up with a site near the Virginia line just north of Mount Airy, North Carolina . . . is this Pilot Mountain you speak of . . . a picture of it looks like it should be in Monument Valley . . . a monolith showing its age . . . did the Park Service burn the top . . . burning would help parts of Pisgah National Forest I think, but the trouble would be with a "controlled" burn . . . the land gets pretty rough from what I can see of it . . . I flew over it on the way to Asheville once . . . there was no where to land that was for sure . . . I spent the whole time as a passenger looking for a place to land, so a fire might be hard to head off or control . . . I don't know though . . . just tring to get you to elaborate on it . . . I cain't keep up with the music talk . . . old man ain't got nothin' to stick it too . . . I bought some Willie Nelson and Ray Charles cd's . . . I know . . . I am hopeless . . . but I may go to Cherokee to see "Unto These Hills" for the 6th or 7th time this weekend . . . I am really going to watch my two grandchildren react to the growing darkness of the night and the bats flying above in the cool mountain air . . . the amphitheatre (sp)is much as it was when I was their age . . . . Bill

Bill that is th other Pilot Mountain. Often Mountains can have the same name. For example, Cold Mountain is common.
It does the ground some good, burning off leaves, instead of gradually breaking down they gt there faster. As long as they are not over burned. Fire suppression is not the answer. You end up with too much stuff to burn. If it's a little wet, the fire won't get out of hand.

The Indians and the Settlers burned these mountains off commonly. They did it to expose the mast. The Piedmont was a big savanna. Controlled burns clear out allot of under growth. Like that Ivey, or Mnt Laurel. It chokes the sun out, just takes over. Look at the one picture of the sunlight reaching through. It lets grasses grow that is more beneficial to Wildlife.

I'm going to trash can that double comment, clean things up a tad. I'm glad someone asked.

Is the Pilot Mountain you spoke of close to Brevard or Pisgah National Forest? I was just curious . . . I need to go back and read the post more carefully . . . I think I agree with you that a controlled burn would help a lot of what is going on in the area . . . I think I was told that the historically bald or high grasslands need it . . . they are being overgrown . . . it is interesting that so much savannah has been lost . . . it might become more important now that the Park Service has put elk back into the Smokies . . . . Bill, if it's nearest any Zip Code, it's closer to Balsam Grove. But, yes, its in Transylvania County in the National Forest. It spurs off of the Silver Mine Lead, which is just east of Devil's Court House off of the Parkway. I believe I posted a picture of it the first of the year. It would have been from th west side, which from a distance is a mirror image of the east side.

The Park Service had a hand, but it was the Wildlife Commission and Private Citizens of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation that put the Elk there, but they will not burn the Smokies. That would freak out the Tourist and Serra Club, and that's a shame. Right next to me, th Auger Hole, AKA Gorges State Park could use it, but it's such a darling of Serra Club, that it won't happen.

I belong to the Sierra Club, but I think they are arrogant and stupid in such matters. I agree with a policy of some controlled burning. My goodness, as you mentioned before, when I visited Cades Cove there were so many dead trees on the edge of it riding up to New Found Gap and down to Cherokee . . . a controlled burn didn't do that . . . I think I am going to join the Blueridge Parkway Association . . . or something like that . . . I ain't agin' ya!
