The Tourist Games

I went to the MWR to see The Hunger Games last night. Next door they were doing karaoke. Karaoke is a disgusting and vile thing. Even though I'm a Libertarian, I contemplate it being outlawed, punishable by electrocution. Yes, karaoke singers should wear shock collars. Even in a boring place like Kuwait. As for the movie, I got it, enjoyed it and could say, "yep, looks like the rivers back home". Though, the majority of it was filmed down next to Hickory. I was reading the man that owns that old mill town in the movie wants to sell it. The tourist Mongers keep showing up there and it worries him. Honestly, I didn't see any scenery to get excited about. Good story line, though. sadly enough, I think our society is getting kind of like that, but, I'm not getting on my soap box today. Well, that's about it.

About my absence from posting, honestly, I just ain't felt like it.

So, what's your thoughts in Hurricane Lanterns?

Have not seen the movie, probably will not. I grew up surrounded by and living in a mill village. Such villages were common in Gaston County, NC, that's where the "lintheads" lived after they came down from the mountains to find work.
Erskine Caldwell's "God's Little Acre" gives a very accurate depiction of a mill village.
All the folks I knew were just trying to make a living during hard times.
All the cotton mills are overseas now.

  2. Olengineer, I've been swamped the last few days. I never really thought about the word linthead and it's meaning. Which, makes sense, I used to live next door to a boy that worked in the cotton mill before it shut down, he'd come home with lint in his hair. He's an odd one, but, I always counted him as my friend...Until he found out I had had some dates with a girl he knew on line. She asked him how he knew me, he said he never did and unfriended me on FaceBook. That bit of low class right there kind of sealed the unfriend thing.

I've not seen the Hunger Games yet - heard mixed things about it, some people love it, some don't - my brother described it as 'Battle Royale with Cheese', which I thought was quite funny.

Hope you rediscover the drive to start positing again - it always fascinating to read blogs from military and ex military types.
